Particle board comes in several thicknesses which make it a versatile enough product to be used in roofing.

Like particle board and mdf osb comes from wood shavings. We form the layers by shredding wood and then joining them together with adhesive. Osb is widely used as roof decking material. This is especially common on a low slope roof.

A homeowner recently wrote and asked me the following regarding osb roof decking. Particle board in modern homes is required to be visibly marked as astm type 2 m w. If not of a type approved for use as roof sheathing particle board strength and stability when exposed to moisture is significantly lower than that of plywood or oriented strand board osb more commonly used for this application. Although oriented stranded board osb has similar uses to plywood it has a much coarser finish. Treated lumber is often used as the main material with thin sheets of treated particle board being placed on top and then shingles are attached.
